I
If Nancy Meyers designed a tropical getaway, I’m convinced it would look something like Isla Mujeres—endless ocean views, charming beachside cafés, and the kind of slow, sun-soaked days where the only real decision is whether to have one more margarita or go for a swim first.
For years, I’ve been coming to Mexico again and again, and honestly? It never disappoints. It’s hot, affordable, full of charm, and the food is consistently next-level amazing. There’s something so effortless about this part of the world—it’s chic without trying, casual but elegant, and always, always fun.
This trip is a little bit of everything—a full week of barefoot luxury on Isla Mujeres, followed by seven days of exploration across Tulum, Cozumel, ancient ruins, and one of the most surreal places on earth: Río Lagartos (which, by the way, did absolute wonders for my psoriasis).
- Isla Mujeres is best explored by golf cart—but they really crank the prices at Christmas to nearly $200 a day (something to keep in mind).
- After the island, rent a car in Cancún to explore Tulum, Cozumel, Ek Balam, Chichén Itzá, and Río Lagartos. The freedom to drive makes the entire second half of the trip so much easier and more enjoyable.
- This is a magical itinerary, full of stunning beaches, ancient history, and some of the best food in Mexico.
Let’s get into it.
Forget massive all-inclusive resorts (you know they’re not my vibe). These are the best boutique hotels and beachfront villas that feel like a proper escape.
Isla Mujeres: The Ultimate Beach Hideaways
- Casa de los Sueños – A stunning oceanfront boutique hotel that feels like a private estate. Infinity pool, sea breezes, and the best view of the Caribbean sunrise.
- Icaco Island Village – Perfectly curated, minimalist-chic, and utterly romantic. It’s adults-only and right on the water, making it perfect for those who want peace and quiet.
- Casa Coco by Coco B Isla – A laid-back luxury villa with private beach access, a gorgeous pool, and some of the best margaritas in town.
- Hotel Secreto – A small, stylish hideaway with an infinity pool and a private, tucked-away feel.
Tulum: Where to Stay in the Jungle & By the Beach
- Jashita Hotel – A secluded, beachfront retreat that’s just far enough from the chaos of Tulum’s main strip. Gorgeous design, incredible service, and a private feel.
- La Valise Tulum – If you want something effortlessly stylish, with private plunge pools and rustic-luxe decor, this is the place.
Cozumel: Where to Stay After Diving & Snorkeling
- Hotel B Cozumel – A boutique oceanfront retreat with a private pier and an incredible seafood restaurant.
Valladolid & Río Lagartos: Hidden Luxury Gems
- Le Muuch Hotel (Valladolid) – A stunning little boutique hotel in the heart of one of Mexico’s prettiest colonial towns—perfect for a night after Chichén Itzá.
- Yuum Ha Boutique Hotel (Río Lagartos) – An absolute hidden gem that sits right on the water—the perfect launch point for a morning floating in those unreal pink lagoons.
- Lola Valentina – The kind of place where you go for breakfast and somehow end up staying for lunch. Fresh juices, seafood tostadas, and incredible coffee.
- Mar-Bella Fish Market – Pick your seafood from the day’s fresh catch, have it grilled to perfection, and eat with your toes in the sand.
- The Joint Reggae Bar & Grill – Casual, fun, and exactly where you want to be when the sun starts to set with a mezcal in hand.
- Los Tacos de Humo – The best tacos on the island—fresh tortillas, perfectly seasoned meats, and no frills.
- Olivia – Mediterranean-inspired, romantic, and perfect for a slow, candlelit dinner after a long day in the sun.
Tulum & Beyond: Iconic Dining Spots
- Hartwood (Tulum) – One of the best restaurants in Mexico. Everything is wood-fired, hyper-local, and beyond delicious.
- Arca (Tulum) – Modern, chic, and effortlessly cool, this is where you’ll have one of the most memorable meals of your trip.
- La Perla Pixan (Valladolid) – A stunning, jungle-inspired dining experience featuring ancestral Mayan cooking techniques.
Week 1: Isla Mujeres
- Day 1-2: Relax & Explore by Golf Cart (but keep in mind that during Christmas, they charge almost $200/day—ouch!)
- Day 3: Boat Day – Charter a boat for the day and visit Playa Norte, Isla Contoy, and hidden snorkeling spots.
- Day 4: Visit Garrafón Natural Reef Park
- Day 5-6: More Beach, More Mezcal, More Relaxation
- Day 7: Head to Cancún, Rent a Car & Start the Next Adventure
- Day 8-9: Tulum – Explore Tulum’s beaches, Mayan ruins, cenotes, and nightlife.
- Day 10: Ferry to Cozumel – Snorkeling, fresh seafood, and low-key beach vibes.
- Day 11-12: Valladolid & Chichén Itzá – Visit one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and stay overnight in charming Valladolid.
- Day 13: Ek Balam – A stunning Mayan ruin with fewer crowds than Chichén Itzá.
- Day 14: Río Lagartos (Pink Lagoon) – The ultimate way to end the trip. Floating in these cotton candy-colored waters did absolute wonders for my psoriasis—it’s a surreal experience, and worth the drive.
