A Jonathon Hawes Guide to Isla Mujeres & Beyond
Mexico has a magic to it that’s impossible to describe—I’ve been dozens of times, and every trip is better than the last. It’s hot, affordable, vibrant, and delicious, and there’s something deeply grounding about this part of the world. And if you come home without a suitcase full of mezcal, handmade textiles, and at least one sun-kissed afternoon nap under your belt? You’re simply doing it wrong.

I

If Nancy Meyers designed a tropical getaway, I’m convinced it would look something like Isla Mujeres—endless ocean views, charming beachside cafés, and the kind of slow, sun-soaked days where the only real decision is whether to have one more margarita or go for a swim first.

For years, I’ve been coming to Mexico again and again, and honestly? It never disappoints. It’s hot, affordable, full of charm, and the food is consistently next-level amazing. There’s something so effortless about this part of the world—it’s chic without trying, casual but elegant, and always, always fun.

This trip is a little bit of everythinga full week of barefoot luxury on Isla Mujeres, followed by seven days of exploration across Tulum, Cozumel, ancient ruins, and one of the most surreal places on earth: Río Lagartos (which, by the way, did absolute wonders for my psoriasis).

A Few Notes Before We Start:
  • Isla Mujeres is best explored by golf cart—but they really crank the prices at Christmas to nearly $200 a day (something to keep in mind).
  • After the island, rent a car in Cancún to explore Tulum, Cozumel, Ek Balam, Chichén Itzá, and Río Lagartos. The freedom to drive makes the entire second half of the trip so much easier and more enjoyable.
  • This is a magical itinerary, full of stunning beaches, ancient history, and some of the best food in Mexico.

Let’s get into it.
